We’ve all indulged during the festive period, that extra Yorkshire pudding with your Christmas dinner, that extra gallon of beer on New Year, all that merriment can leave you feeling a little sluggish and plump so we pledge to be more active, get more exercise and maybe even join a gym in an attempt to shed a few pounds. But the stats show that most of us despite the good intentions do not last very long with many of us not even lasting until the end of January.
Millions Are Wasted on Gym Memberships Research has shown that up to £40 million per year is wasted by people living in the UK on gym memberships, exercise classes and slimming groups that they never attend, indeed among the 2000 asked who had taken gym memberships the average wastage was over £300 last year. The main reason for the losses was active memberships that were either forgotten as the direct debit continued or the most common reason, that “I’ll go tomorrow” routine, where we say we want to go but never seem to find the motivation.
Women Last Longer The research also showed a clear trend regarding gender, with men far more likely to not even make it past January with a surprising 61% of men who had joined a gym had stopped going by February. Women meanwhile displayed more staying power with only 22% of women surveyed at the first hurdle. On the whole the stats revealed that around 40% of those who opened gym memberships in January were not still attending in Feb.
Richard Harvey of ApprovedTrader.co.uk commented ‘Most of us make a resolution to look after our bodies better in a New Year, it’s natural after a period of celebration and over indulgence but life often gets in the way of regularly attending a gym. A home gym could be a great idea as it allow you to fit in exercise at home around your busy work and family schedule.’ Why Not Consider a Home Gym? Spending you money on a home gym instead of shelling out on high membership fees could be the best way to go, sometimes it can be difficult to put time aside to visit a gym so membership fees are wasted. Not having to travel to the gym makes exercise easily accessible and you always have the guarantee that the equipment you want to use will be available.
For those of us who are self-conscious, a public gym can be an intimidating place with the equipment lined up and mirrors everywhere, people with sculpted bodies working on their look this may dissuade some from going to the gym to lose those extra few pounds. Home gyms allow you to work out in the privacy of your own home without anyone else there to see you sweat. The equipment being within reach rather than a journey away could also be a huge motivator for some of us.
One of the main benefits of a home gym or exercise are over a public gym has to be cost effectiveness, unless you are going to be able to go regularly and attend many classes for a sustained period it is unlikely you will be able to get the full value for money. When you consider the cost of the membership and the travel costs from home and back you could find that home gym equipment is the cheaper option in the long run, with an average gym membership costing upwards of £400 per year a home gym can pay for itself many times over thee years.
