A carpet is a floor covering made from textile materials attached to a backing or underlay. The main layer or ‘pile’ is made from manmade fibres such as nylon or polyester or natural materials such as wool and is usually formed with twisted or heat treated tufts to maintain shape.
The phrase carpet originates from the Italian term ‘carpita’ which means to pluck, the term was historically used for table and wall coverings. Early use of carpet to cover floors started after the opening of trade routes with Western Europe and Asia in the 18th century.
In modern times more and more types of carpet have become available on the market, they come in many colours and patterns and are made from different materials. Each type offers different benefits and advantages from differing costs to varying levels of softness and comfort to more easily cleaned carpets depending on your specific needs and choices.
Styles include tufted carpet, this is probable the most commonly seen type of carpet in the UK, they have their pile injected onto a backing material which is stuck to a layer of hessian weave to offer stability. Knotted carpets are often more expensive but can be very lush, hand knotting is most prevalent in Kashmir or oriental rugs.
Needlefelt carpets are a relatively new technology, needles are made by joining individual synthetic fibres using needles to create a durable floor covering. Another style, popular in Arabia, India and Pakistan is woven, it is made in a similar way to woven fabric and due to its slow manufacturing process is usually quite expensive.
