Screeding a floor is the process of applying a cement based product onto a floor base in order to give you a surface to lay your floor covering such as tiles or laminate flooring on and also to raise the floor to the required level, perhaps to match the level of an existing floor. Screeding can be any thickness you require, though different thicknesses may require different materials and techniques to achieve the best finish, in general a screed can be anything from 2cm to 20cm.

This process is essential to ensure durability of your floor covering, indeed some floor coverings such as laminate and linoleum flooring will require the floor to be perfectly level, in these situations the screed must be covered with a self-levelling floor compound. Even if you are not laying such a floor covering, levelling the floor is always a good idea, if the floor is perfectly level it will without doubt improve the quality of the finish, allow you to use less materials such as tile adhesive and even help improve the longevity of the floor covering itself.

If you have a floor which where you aren’t sure how to go forward or which type of floor covering would suit the areas best then an experienced flooring professional should be able to talk you through the process and give you the necessary advice as how to move forward.
